  1. Rolling Hills - perched on the crest of the Diablo Range south of San Jose, much of Henry Coe State Park is rugged country carpeted by grassy hillsides and oak savannah. Ponderosa pines cap the highest peaks (3600 feet) while black oaks, madrone, laurels and chaparral cover the valleys.

  2. Ground Iris - Henry Coe State Park is famous for it flowering hillsides that bloom in the spring (around April). Green hillsides give way to golden brown fields in the summer as temperatures can reach in the 100's and water dries up.

  3. Park Headquarters - at the headquarters one can get a glimpse of California ranch life. The Coe Ranch operated here up until the 1930's with cattle brandings and annual gatherings. In 1953 this land, some 12,500 acres, was given to the people. The park today is over 100 square miles including the Orestimba Wilderness nestled within.

  4. Oak Tree - this valley oak graces the trail like so many oak trees silhouetted by the skyline. If you don't make it for the colorful wildflowers in the spring, at least come to see these wonderful oak woodlands any time of the year.

  5. Bobcat - This bobcat was actually spotted on the drive up to Henry Coe headquarters early in the morning. It is an indication of the wildlife in this area including wild pigs, turkeys, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks and mule deer. There are other criters too like snakes, lizards, red-tailed hawks, vultures, falcons and even golden eagles.

  6. Old Wagon - at the headquarters you can browse through the barns to see ranch relics like this old wagon, probably used to procure supplies from the Santa Clara Valley below. The visitor center also has a ranch exhibit and wildlife display.
