Sourgrass
Slide Info. - Hwy. 4 on the way to Bear Valley
Some
interesting facts:
- Occured during the El
Niño year of 1997, on Jan 1st.
- Known as the "Sourgrass
Slide," but it is not a true slide. Today all you will see is a giant
gash or scar with little vegetation as far as the eye can see. (see scar
in photo)
- Measures: 300 feet by
2 1/2 miles long and 35 feet high or deep
- 191,020 cubic yards of
water, mud, whole trees, boulders and vegetation
- Surged at 12 MPH.
- Flowed into the North
Fork of the Stanislaus River, taking out the Sourgrass campgrounds and Boards
Crossing Bridge.
- Today the character of
the river is much different, with debris and boulders creating a massive rapid
